Uses
Cuttlefish bone is a hard, brittle internal structure found in all members of the family "SEPIIDAE" commonly known as "CUTTLE FISH". In the U.S.A however, there are no naturally found species and the most commonly imported species is from Bali called "SEPIA" which is otherwise known as "CUTTLE FISH".
In past, it was used in making polishing powder. This polishing powder in turn was added to toothpaste and also used as an antacid. Today these cuttlebones are commonly used as calcium-rich, dietary supplements for caged birds, chinchillas, hermit crabs, snails, and other reptiles. This cuttlefish bone is composed primarily of aragonite. It is a chambered gas-filled shell used for buoyancy control.
These cuttlefish bones are mainly used as Bird Feeders. The calcareous internal shell of a cuttlefish is used as a supplement to the diet of birds. These cuttlefish bones are also used as feeders for birds like parrots and also other pet birds. This is used as a convenient source of calcium to aid in your bird's diet.
